Kartoffelferien - The Potato Holiday
In the past, when a large part of the Danish population still lived in and of the countryside, many families were busy working on the fields in autumn. Therefore children were taken out of school for a week to work side by side with their parents, harvesting potatoes before the winter season. To this day children enjoy a school-free week in October to have an autumn holiday, which is also known as kartoffelferie (potato holiday) among Danes. Autumn holidays in Denmark are now filled with events and activities for children to participate in. Just see VisitAarhus’ guide to a great autumn holiday here (in Danish).
