Aarhus - The European Volunteering Capital of 2018
After having been the European Capital of Culture in 2017, Aarhus has been chosen as the European Volunteering Capital of 2018. Each year the title is given to a European municipality which has distinguished itself in terms of volunteering. In this regard, Aarhus has stood out. On choosing Aarhus as the Volunteering Capital, the jury emphasized the citizenship policy that Aarhus City council has adopted. The jury also remarked that in Aarhus municipality, the volunteers help set the agenda on how the municipality and the civil society can cooperate in relation to culture and social welfare areas. Jette Skive, Counselor of the Health Care Department says, “When it comes to volunteering, Aarhus is very special – for example in the health and elderly area, many people are involved in creating activities”. Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary is the patron of Aarhus European Volunteering Capital, which brings further focus to this title.
By being the European Volunteering Capital of 2018, Aarhus strives to increase and improve the cooperation between citizens and the municipality in order to make it easier to become a volunteer in Aarhus. The Mayor Jacob Bundsgaard says on in relation to this, “We will celebrate and develop voluntariness in 2018, because being a volunteer should be easy, fun and accessible for everybody”. He goes on to say, “As we could see during the European Capital of Culture 2017, a title creates the opportunity to specialize and develop an area even more, – and this is the whole idea of the European Volunteer Capital”. The Mayor is also Chairman of the Committee on Volunteering and Cooperation in the Municipality of Aarhus.
