Christmas Markets and Events In and Around Aarhus



Christmas is just around the corner, and throughout December you can experience a lot of Christmas markets and events all around the city. Visit some of these places to get in the Christmas spirit, enjoy Christmas goodies and atmosphere, and maybe pick up a present or two. 
 
Here is an overview of some of the many activities that take place in and around Aarhus until Christmas:
 

Christmas Market at Aarhus Central Food Market

The food stalls at Aarhus Central Food Market offer different Christmas goodies, both in their traditional and new, innovative forms. There will be a lot of different Christmas events and activities in the time leading up to Christmas, so be sure to stop by.

Christmas in Tivoli Friheden

This year Friheden will be decorated with a 70 meter long light tunnel with 50,000 LED lights, a 16 km long Christmas garland and more than 3,000 Christmas baubles. It is going to be a magical experience taking a walk in the park. 

There will be several food stands filled with delicious Christmas inspired food, so there is something for everyone.

Nemo's Christmas Market at Bispetorvet

Søren Østergaard (known from the popular Zirkus Nemo) invites you to the cozy and nostalgic Christmas Market at Bispetorvet. There will be carousels, lucky wheels, Christmas goodies and entertainment for the whole family.

Christmas in Den Gamle By (The Old Town)

In The Old Town you can experience Christmas the way that Danes have celebrated it through centuries. There will be Christmas exhibitions for children and adults, historic shops, and a Christmas market. You can find gifts, goodies, and hot drinks. 

Christmas in The Old Town is a depiction of the history of Christmas and the way it has been celebrated in Denmark through the last 400 years. You can visit the historic houses and get a glimpse of the history of Christmas in Denmark.

Christmas Market at Ridehuset

Byens Kunst- & Julemarked (The Art & Christmas Market of the City) takes place in Ridehuset - right in the heart of Aarhus, just a few minutes’ walk from the central train station and the main walking street. 

Ridehuset, which was originally old cavalry barracks, was built in 1876-1877. Decorated with lights and stars, it makes the perfect setting for this Christmas market with artisan arts and crafts.

Christmas Market at Aarhus School of Architecture

At the Christmas market at Aarhus School of Architecture you can experience 50 stalls with beautiful designs and Christmas gift ideas from the students at Aarhus School of Architecture.

Lighting of the Christmas Tree at The Town Hall Square

The huge Christmas tree at The Town Hall Square will be lit on the first Sunday of Advent. As per usual the mayor, Jacob Bundsgaard, will push the button that lights the thousand lights on the gigantic Christmas tree. Afterwards there will be entertainment, singing, and music.

Christmas in Ebeltoft

Come to Ebeltoft to experience the Christmas spirit with a lot of cozy activities in ‘Den gamle Farvergård’ and on the streets. The children can meet Santa, carve in wood, and during this weekend, the shops will be open from 10-15.

Christmas Market at Godsbanen

Godsbanen lets in the Christmas spirit with their Christmas market, featuring stalls with design and artisan crafts, open workshops, good food, music, Christmas tree sale, and other fun activities. You can find unique Christmas gifts in the many stalls that are full of design, art, and crafts produced at Godsbanen. Here you can find ceramics, leather goods, wooden things, textiles, jewelry, drawings, prints, literature, Christmas ornaments, and much more. You can also try your luck in the Christmas tombola with more than 400 prizes. 

Kødbyens Mad & Marked fills up den Rå Hal with delicacies and wonderful Christmas scents of waffles, pancakes, Christmas bakes, and much more.

Christmas Market at Ingerslev Boulevard

The popular weekly market at Ingerslev Boulevard will be transformed into a Christmas market with food and traditional Christmas decorations.

Ice Skating

In front of the Music Hall, a big ice skating rink will be set up once the temperatures drop. Here you can skate to your heart’s desire – all you need is skates. If you don’t have your own, you can rent them on location.

Price: Free. Rental of Ice skates costs 45 DKK.
 

Christmas at Ø

During the first three weekends in December, there will be a lot of Christmas events and activities at Aarhus Ø.

  • Experience ‘Surfing Santa’ at Aarhus Watersports Complex
  • Try delicious Christmas specialties at the different food booths
  • Experience arts crafts and make your own Christmas decoration with Aarhus Makers

Saint Lucy Procession in Your Rainbow Panorama at ARoS

December 13 marks Saint Lucy's Day. The saint of light is celebrated in schools, churches, and associations with processions where young girls dressed in white sing the “Sankta Lucia” song while carrying a lit candle. 

This year you can experience a Saint Lucy procession at ARoS where Denmark’s most beautiful Saint Lucy procession will light up the rainbow at the top of Aarhus. 
You can experience it from the museum or from the streets of Aarhus. And it is a sight for sore eyes.

Saint Lucy Procession in Kayak

Aarhus Kano- og Kajakklub December 13 marks Saint Lucy's Day with a procession on the water. It starts at 18:00 at Aarhus Kano- og Kajalklub, Kystpromenaden 7, and has three stops on the Lucy’s route, where they will sing the Lucy’s song:
  • Ø-haverne: approx. 18:30
  • Isflagerne at Pakhus13 (next to Dokk1): approx. 19:15
  • ’Det Lille Hus på Havnen, Flemming Bamse Jørgensens Plads: approx. 19:45
Guiding times at the different stops. You will have the best view from Isflagerne at Pakhus13 (next to Dokk1), and the most cozy atmosphere is at ‘Det Lille Hus på Havnen’ where you can buy Gløgg and the children can make their own Lucy’s lantern.
